Hear from a Smoke Free Star

Chris joined the Smokefree Oxon programme and BetterPoints Oxfordshire to support his partner in quitting smoking and to finally stop himself after more than 30 years. With encouragement and reward incentives, he’s been able achieve his longest smoke-free period yet.

How did you find out about the Smokefree Oxon programme and BetterPoints Oxfordshire, and why did you choose to get involved?

"I was introduced to the programme and BetterPoints by my partner. She wanted to give up smoking and had faced challenges quitting in the past. To support her, I decided to quit at the same time, as it’s incredibly hard to stop if you’re living with someone who continues as normal.
The programme has been really good and helped break the cycle I was stuck in. The rewards in the app have definitely helped too, they were a genuine incentive to keep going. Reaching milestones and receiving rewards for them gave me a real sense of achievement, and I used my points towards vouchers for Christmas shopping, which was really handy.
I’ve been a smoker since the age of 14 and I’m now 49. I haven’t smoked since 13 September last year, which is the longest I’ve gone without a cigarette since I started. I’m currently using a vape, but with the support of the programme I’m confident I’ll be completely nicotine-free by the end of 2026. I want to give a huge thank you to everyone involved in supporting me on this journey.

What have been the benefits so far?

"It’s helped financially, and I feel fitter. Friends have commented that I look healthier and that there’s more colour in my face. I’ve also regained my sense of taste, and I’m now at a point where I don’t feel tempted anymore. At a Christmas party where people were smoking, I really didn’t like the smell!

Apart from the stop smoking rewards, what else have you enjoyed about BetterPoints Oxfordshire? Has it influenced any other behaviour?

"I enjoy seeing my points build up from walking my dog, and the real-time stats are great as they highlight benefits for both health and the environment.
Before signing up, I thought I was walking about an hour a day, but it turned out I was doing less. So I’ve started walking longer routes to hit that target.
It’s also influenced my travel choices. After seeing a promotion in the app offering extra rewards for public transport, I chose to take the train when travelling to Oxford or London to earn more points."
