Hear from a Healthy Weight Hero

After struggling to maintain her weight following a cycling accident, Naomi found the support she was looking for through the Beezee programme and BetterPoints. Here is what she had to say:

How did you find out about the Beezee programme and why did you choose to get involved?

“I found out about Beezee through the BetterPoints app. It came at the perfect time really as I had been giving some serious thought to how I should go about losing weight. I had been looking at myself and thinking, ‘I don’t look or feel very healthy’.
I had a nasty cycling accident 6 years ago, which meant I couldn’t exercise for 18 months. I still have reduced mobility now. As you can imagine, as I wasn’t moving much it meant I put on weight.
When I had sufficiently recovered I used Slimming World, which got the weight off quickly, but it wasn’t sustainable. It was a short term fix. Beezee has provided me with something that will be beneficial for the longer-term.

Could you tell us more about the programme and how it has benefited you?

The mindful eating practice I’ve been taught has been really helpful. It’s made me more conscious of portion size too.
I work in a school and there is food everywhere. Whilst I’d eat a healthy breakfast and lunch, there was always biscuits and crisps in the staffroom that I would snack on, which was a key reason for the weight gain.
The programme has made me take a step back and ask myself, ‘do I want this, or do I need this?’.
The coaches made it very engaging and created a good group dynamic. It felt like I was with them at times even though it was all done remotely. Hearing from others about their progress and challenges along the way was also helpful.

Did the BetterPoints rewards help at all?

Definitely! Sometimes I came home from work and thought ‘urgh’, I’m exhausted and I just want to crash out on the sofa and not join the session. But the rewards really did make me stick to it when I wasn’t feeling super motivated.

Has the app had an influence on any other behaviour?

Yes! I am walking a lot more. I’ve developed the habit of going for walk on my lunch break as well as after work, even if it is raining. Before the app, on those rainy days, I would have stayed inside.
My colleague and I signed up together and we’ve developed a friendly competition. If she goes for a walk, I have to join her and vice versa.
Whilst it isn’t rewarded in the app, I’ve taken up swimming. It’s indirectly given me the push to try different ways of getting fitter and healthier.
Knowing there is an incentive, which you can eventually use to treat yourself, keeps you going. I’ve recently used my BetterPoints to buy a new swimming costume. It’s an excellent and fun scheme.”
